I grew up in the rural Appalachians, my grandpa played the mandolin and regulary made music with friends, even had a little building next to the barn that they met in to play. I also was raised in a little baptist church and regularly had guest muscians and pretty dang good ones that went to the church. So bluegrass and gospel bluegrass are in my blood, a few of my favorites: Alison Krauss, Ricky Scaggs, The Inspirations, Tony Rice, Ralph Stanley, Bill Munroe, Emmylou Harris, Sally Van Meter, the list is really to long to to put down.
Anybody else listen to Bluegrass, if so what are some of your favorite artists? Chris

Jetgirl, There is a decent festival every fall about 5 miles from my mom and dad's house. If I am anywhere near I always try to make it, they don't have any big names just mostly local folks but some pretty dang good music, food, and beverages. Chris

Grow'in up in the "Bluegrass" state I have always been surrounded by bluegrass music. My dad use to say, "It aint music if there aint no banjo or fiddle in the band!"
Aint nothing like a little Flatt and Scruggs and some ice cold beer to get a party started!

Chris I grew up in the Knobs of southern IN ( Knobs are sort of foothills only with no mountians to lead to) and am also a huge fan of Bluegrass. That is some pretty good musical company you keep there Chris. In my opinion Alison Krauss is as close to the voice of an Angel one is likely to hear on earth. Ralph Stanley and Bill Monroe are old school greats. Dr. Stanley recently released a cd titled "A Distant Land to Roam, Songs From The Carter Family. "God Gave Noah A Rainbow Sign" is one of my favorite tracks. Bluegrass is truly the most American of all music and is as pure a music as ever was. For a great mix of gospel and bluegrass I like the soundtrack from the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. Well time to put in a CD, thanks for the great topic. Gary

I'm not a huge Bluegrass fan, but do enjoy listening to WNCW's Goin' Across the Mountain on Saturdays.

Bluegrass and Old Time music is what I do when I'm not off shooting rifle matches. I live close to Wilkesboro, NC and they havea huge festival every year in honor of the late Merle Watson. Doc Watson lives about 25 miles from me, so there a are a lot of guitar ickers in this region and some incredible musicians of all the instruments. I've played guitar since I was about 12 years old, and every chance I get I go and jam with my fiddle playing friend, a banjo picker, and a bass player. Tony Rice has always been one of my favorite guitar players, and I ahve afew other favorites. Wayne Henderson is a friend, and one of the best guitarist in the world, and he also builds world class accoustic guitars. Great thread. Reminds me of how much fun I'm missing by not playing more!

Theres precious little live Bluegrass in the UK, mostly local small combos who get together once in a while. Flatt & Scruggs have to be among my favourites to listen to while driving. I have been trying to learn to play the 5-string banjo for several years now, but nobody over here teaches so it's all from books and CDs - not the same really.

I'm not into the Bluegrass scene, but I do have abuddy of mine who is big time!! He is considered to be one of the best mandolin player in the country. He has played the Grand Ole Oprey several times, i believe he has played with Ricky Skaggs among others.. "Johnny Staats and The Delivery Boys".. He lives just on the other side of the ridge from me, he is also my UPS delivery guy.. So I see him quite often, bringing me shooting supplies..
