Hi everyone, My aunt just sold me a S&W model 39-2 (9mm Parabellum) for $350. She also threw in a sweet pistol case, some ammo, and 2 clips. My first quistion is: How do you remove the reciever? I wanted to clean it up before I shoot it tomorrow. Another thing: Is this a collectible pistol or something? It doesn't look that old. When I checked the S&W site, it didn't even have this model number on it! Here's a pic (oh, BTW, mine is not deacivated {whatever that means}):

Very Cool Gun TKD , you don't see those much anymore. This was the gun that S&W used for a base for the very famous Model 52 (the finest center fire target pistol ever made). The magazines are getting harder to fins so that was a big plus. Post this in the "Ask Jim" section and he will give you the skinny on this nice gun Dwight

Crazy did you figure out how to get the pistol apart? Which part are you referring to when you say receiver? I am not sure about the "deactivated". I believe that the lever on the slide by the serrations is a decocking lever. I don't think that it is a safety.
On the left side of the pistol, there is a lever that is used to lock the slide back. When the slide is pulled back, you push the lever up. The tab on the end of the lever goes into the notch (it is under the word "wesson") that is cut into the receiver. On the other end of the lever is a pin that goes competely through the frame.
Now the pistol will break down into 4 groups. 1: Frame 2: Slide 3: Barrel 4. recoil spring and guide rod.
Pull the slide back until the notch lines up with the big end of the slide release lever. Now push the pin from the right side of the pistol to get it started. You have to hold the slide in this position until you get the pin out. Once the pin is out, let the slide ease forward and off the frame. Becareful because the slide will still be under tension from the recoil spring. When you remove the spring and guide rod, the barrel can be removed from the frame.
The assembly is basically just the reverse.
This is all that you need to take apart for general cleaning.
Unless you are sure of what you are doing, do not take any thing else out of the frame or the slide. I would strongly advise, that you don't even try to remove the trigger assembly from the frame or the firing pin assembly from the slide.
If any other questions, contact a compentant gunsmith or call Smith & Wesson's customer service.

RimfireKid,
Yes, by reciever I meant slide, my bad. And forget about the "deactivated" part. It had something to do w/ the link that didn't work.
I'm still a little confused tho. When you say 'Pull the slide back until the notch lines up with the big end of the slide release lever', do you mean to lock the slide back, or pull it all the way back? Is the pin you're talking about above the trigger? Does the slide lock lever thingy go w/ the pin? Should it be rediculously hard?
Sorry for asking so many questions. Thanks for the info.

Crazy: You only need to move the slide back about an inch or so. Do not lock the slide back, that is too far back. The pin directly above the trigger, holds the trigger in place (DO NOT remove it). Look on the right side of the pistol and you will see the S&W emblem. About 11 0'clock, you will see the end of the pin that you will push on. The other side of that pin is attached to the slide release lever. Align the notch in the slide, with the end of the slide release lever that is toward the muzzle.
If you pm me with your phone number, I will give you a call and talk you through it. Just let me know when to call.
