Yes, I have read some on this. I might jump in there and get a centerfire kit also. Does the centerfire boltface use the same big goofy extractor - please say "no"?

Sorry to say, it uses the same extractor. The firing pin groove is cut deeper and the firing pin replaced is about all, as I remember. The cases are machined so the inside is straight, not bottlenecked and they're real thick at the back. There is also a Schroeder (sp) conversion that uses resized and then machined Hornet cases.
Might be a good idea to start a new thread within "Magnum talk" and move it. I'm just not sure how to do it yet.

Mine are both semis... an early (single extractor) Ruger 10/22M with a 96/17 barrel and a Remington 597M... haven't had a moment's trouble with either, and they are both way more accurate than I can hold offhand. Good guns, and a good cartridge, IMO. How often do you clean them? Of the "firing out of battery" problems reported on the 597s, a dis-proportionate number seem to be with .17HMRs. It was usually guns that had several rounds, 100- 150 or more, fired without cleaning.

I have a 592 and have 2 bolt faces for it.... the original, in case someone does decide to make a run of 5mm Mag., and one that is modified for 5mm Craig. I bought the extra bolt piece back when Mike Craig was handling it himself about 7 or 8 years ago. Now Eagle View Research Center is handling it for him. www.5mmcraig.com/I tried a few different loads when I first got it and it wasn't all that accurate. Now with all the .204 bullets that are available because of the .204 Ruger, some people have found some pretty good reloads. Maybe one of these days.......................... Yes, I have read some on this. I might jump in there and get a centerfire kit also. Does the centerfire boltface use the same big goofy extractor - please say "no"? Sorry folks. If this 5mm stuff goes much further, we will move it to another thread. Its all good though, right? 5mm mag posts are more than welcome here, it may also help to give a background on it for users who have not heard of it.

Usually after each outing (<100 rounds), but I have gone longer, although very rarely go beyond 200 rounds before cleaning.

The .17 OOB case ruptures might not be so cut and dry. I have a .17HMR that is a conversion from a Ruger 10-22LR and I have found some serious extractor marks on the case rims. I believe the problems could be a combination of dirty chamber and sharp (ie. VQ Exact Edge) extractors. When the chamber gets dirty, not only does the round not chamber properly but the case grips the chamber tighter/longer than normal. Once the bolt gets moving though the extractor cannot help but go along for the ride and if the case is stuck the sharp extractor will rip the case head open resulting in what appears to be an out-of-battery rupture. Which it is actually only for different reasons than high pressures.

My CZ 17HMR with aperture sights will shoot with match grade AR15's at 100 yds, and considering that my rifle cost me a whopping $219, I thik it shoots better. I've been having barrel mirage difficulties and have been unable to get out of the 470's, but with a cool to warm barrel it is more than capable of staying in the X ring. I'm on the verge of rebarreling my 22 WMR to 17HMR with a Lilja heavy barrel and putting it in a Richards thumbhole stock. Sort of lost my love affair with the WMR.

cjsdad,
I have a couple of VQ extractors, but they are still in the package... bought them when I first converted my 10/22M to .17 but have never needed them. The original Ruger extractor is still in place and has never missed a beat.

I have a Ruger 77/22M which is dead accurate -- I got it for turkey hunting when I hunted an area where rimfires were legal for turkey. It's also a great late-season squirrel gun.
I was tempted to get a .17 HMR (or rebarrel this rifle) but after shooting the .17 I realized I already had a rifle that would shoot rings around the .17 HMR -- a .22 Hornet. Between the .22 WMR and the .22 Hornet, there's no gap in my battery that needs filling.

Someone sent me an e-mail with a spreadsheet of all the different places online (including hyperlinks) that sell 17HMR ammo, all the different brands and weights and all the prices so it's easy to see who has the best prices for the ammo you shoot in your hummer. Anyone who wants a copy, just send me a pm with your e-mail address and I'll forward it to you.

Well, I must admit, I have some sort of affinity for the HM2 that is seemingly unexplainable, especially the blowback HM2's. I guess I considered it a neat challenge from day 1 to get a Ruger 10/22 to work fantastically with this little round. If nothing else, I have learned a lot about rimfire in general along the way. The HMR is just an extension of what the HM2 will do, further, longer, and kinda nasty up close. Superior accuracy? Not even questionable to me.
