I have a Stevens Model 16 Sidelever Crackshot. Anyone else have one of these and ever shoot them? It apparently cost about $3.00 new. It was the first rifle my brothers and I ever shot, and was probably 50 yrs. old then. My dad was real proud of the fact that it could shoot shorts, longs, and LR (just repeating what his dad had told him.)

Mine specifically, no. This picture, I think, is the Model 16. They made several other affordable boys guns in the late 1800's and early 1900's -- Favorite, Scout, Scout 14 1/2, Crack Shot Model 26 etc. Some were falling blocks with an under lever. The model 16 was a rolling block with a side lever, which I can see in this picture. The rolling block breech is not real substantial, and I can imagine, as the pins wear, it not being square and tight, and having blowback. The barrels were smoothbore and not blued.

Dad had a "Favorite" when I was kid. Nice looking little rifle... a little bigger than a crackshot. Problem was, the firing pin was worn or broken and would only fire about one in 5 shots. You could sometimes rotate the cartridge a few times and it would eventually go off. Then the extractor was broken and you had to poke a rod down the barrel to remove the empty. Mom thought it was dangerous so she took the screw out that holds the lever/falling block assembly and hid it in a coffee can. Some years later we looked for it and it must have gotten thrown away. I had the replacement parts located, but the rifle then disappeared.

You're welcome. (Oh, and it's 2 words -- Crack Shot, my mistake in first post.) Grandparem -- too bad, but your family (and millions of others) that threw their's away have made mine more valuable, so thanks. But I wouldn't give up, it may be in a relative's closet or basement somewhere. The simplicity of the little rifle (which couldn't be made today, with liability issues) is what is so neat about them. You can imagine, during that time period, these guns were most kids' first rifle. Even if it took a couple weeks of hard work, a kid could scrounge up $3 to get a rifle. And put meat on the table. You can't tell from the picture, but on the Model 16, the hammer and breech block are sep. pcs. You thingy the hammer. Then open the breech with the thumb lever (hard to see, but it's the horizontal lever right below the breech block.) Bullet is inserted into barrel, and thumb lever used to close the breech block. PS: I keep typing, "c o c k[without the spaces] the hammer," in post and 4 attempts at Modifying Post. It keeps getting changed to "thingy." Is "c o c k" a bad word on gun forums?

It's in the list of words that are banned, but I imagine since we are just starting out, the list is a generic list from the software supplier. JMO.... I'll bring it up in the moderator section to see if we can delete it from the list or at least sub a more appropriate word for a gun forum.

Thanks for checking. I watch the screen while I type, couldn't figure out how I did that. Then modified post several times before it dawned on me what was happening. I had to add the PS so people wouldn't think I was a doofus for saying, "thingy."

You ever shoot them, or afraid to? 4th edit: Now site won't let me type in the letters, "i m g" So when you see an *, substitue "m" Pictures: you can't attach them from your computer. They need to be hosted on a photo site, then linked to here. After the Post Reply window opens, you can click on the 3rd button (insert image), then type in the URL of your image between "[i*g]" and "[/i*g]". But some sites don't easily allow remote accessing. Easier and better: Set up an account with photobucket.com (free) and upload any pictures you might want to share. Below each image in your "album" are 3 boxes (links.) Click inside the 3rd box to highlight it. Edit > Copy. Then in your message here, Edit > Paste. After you Post Reply, the image will be there. If you paste the URL (http://*************.jpg), people will have to click on the link. If it has "[I*G]" in fornt of it (no spaces) and "[/I*G]" at the end, the image will load automatically. The photobucket 3rd box does this.

Did you shoot it? Or did you just say that you loaded and cocked it, to test the word. Do you really have a Crack Shot? You have an assistant that cocks your guns for you? Thanks for the Karma points, but I thought I would've got points for my signature before getting points for trying to post a dirty word.

Ohhhh, this is bad. Thanks to this post, I just remembered that I bought a Favorite with the nicest wood I have ever seen on Favorite...then, I got busy and put it aside and totally forgot about it...that was about 4 months ago.
Come to think of it, it's not so bad...kinda like getting a new gun without paying any more. ;D

Both are 22Mag and the camo version is a NWTF commemorative edition.
