Thought I'd start a Nylon series thread here, then move it when everything is co-ordinated.
I just bought my first 66 Nylon about 1/2 hour ago. A guy near here is moving and had a few misc. guns for sale. I hope this doesn't start something.... like I have to have one of each model nylon rifle. It's been known to happen to the best of us.

Hey Grandparem, I use to collect the Nylons. In 1981 I had some nice Nylons! I had both the black and brown 66, the 76 lever action, 77 clip feed and had a Nylon 11 and 12 bolt actions. Unfortunetly they were amoung 12 firearms I had stolen Out of the 12 I got three of them back, but none of the Nylons One I got back in 1989, a Ruger MKI. The State Police told me it had been in some Sheriffs office in Arkansas for almost 5 years. When I got it back it was rusted beyond belief and pitted something awlful. I sent it to Ruger to see if they could do anything with it. I got a letter from them saying it was beyond repaire, but if I sent them $68 they would send me a new MKII to replace it! Thats when I fell in love with Ruger and their customer service!

I had a nylon 66 Mohawk Brown that I used in a self defense situation that wound up being stolen in a burglary about 15 years later. I really miss it.

I purchased my Nylon 66 with lawn mowing money in the early 70s. Still have it at least 20,000 rds later. Never malfunctioned.
It sure isn't a scope rifle though. Starts walking shots as the sheet metal receiver heats up. Never had the problem with the open sights. A little strange because the sights are mounted on an extension of the receiver. I think this is explained by the fact that the sight extension comes down half way around the barrel.
A marvelous design. Designed to run with virtually no lubrication. But, don't take the action apart without checking out a gunsmithing book that has the step by step take down narrative and an exploded view.

This is a brown model... pretty common. It isn't the prettiest thing around... probably spent part of it's life bouncing around in a pickup rack. That's pretty common here in Kansas. The receiver cover isn't too bad, but the end of the barrel is scuffed up a little and has a couple "matchhead" sized rust spots. I may have to reblue the barrel someday... good winter project. It appears to be a first year April 1959 model (CF) because an '85 would have a S/N on it. The receiver cover is pretty tight so I may mount a low power scope on it for a while just to see how it does. I doubt that I will leave one on it though. I have most Remington service manuals and the 66 always looked like it would be a good idea to have one for disassembly. I would like to put a Williams groove mounted peep sight on it and remove the open sight. It might have the same problem as a scope though. I can shoot peep sights but the old eyes don't like the opens.

I used to own one, and really liked it. But I made the mistake of selling it years ago. I think I'll start looking for one.

I got a Nylon 66 when they first came out. Spent the summer selling vegetables from my garden door to door in the nearest town.
That thing was accurate. Years later sold it with my whole collection putting myself thru college.
Man, I don't even want to think about those.

Finally got out to the range yesterday for the first time in about 3 weeks... hasn't been the best few weeks for me. Took the 66 along and ran 10 rounds through it just for a function check. Had one misfire... checked the cartridge... had a good solid dent, so ran it through again and it fired. Evidently a bad Federal Lightning... poorly primed or something. Accuracy wasn't good (might have hit a squirrel about 6 out of the 10), but I don't shoot much open sight with my old eyes and it was off-hand. I'm pretty shakey so didn't expect much. Would like to install a Williams groove mounted peep and try it off a bench... don't want to scope it with the notorious "receiver cover", even though this one seems real tight. I think it will shoot okay and as light as it is, might make a good "grandson rifle" in a year or two. Also ran 2 clips through the 7.65mm CZ-50 (Walther PP or PPK clone) I bought from the same guy. Again, I'm not a pistolero, but I could pass the Kansas concealed carry test with it.

I once owned the nylon 66 in brown, and the green one that was clip fed. The 66 was very good even with the open sights. It didn't like the CCI shells and jammed alot with them, but would shoot everything else real well. They both had scopes and I thought were accurate with them. too
